 The BCOE Research Teams initiative, launched in Fall 2021, has supported sixteen research teams and more than sixty faculty members so far.

On Tuesday, November 18th, from 10:00 to 11:15 a.m. in BEB 403, we will host a panel session with past award recipients. Participating faculty will share how their team’s work has evolved over the past four years, highlighting the initiative’s impact on their current research and scholarly activities.

The Bagwell College of Education Research Grant provides faculty members with a funding opportunity to support their research/scholarship agenda. The following six awards of $2,500 were awarded for the 2024-2025 academic year:  

Drs. Rachel E. Gaines and Mei-Lin Chang have been selected as recipients for the BCOE Research Grant to help MAT candidates in Year-long Clinical Experiences (YCE) develop key social-emotional competencies through a three-session workshop. The grant will specifically support developing and implementing the workshop to cover fees or honorarium etc. Their work is significant as it has potential to prepare teacher candidates to provide better instruction and to enjoy longer, more satisfying careers in the classroom.
 
Drs. Kristie W. Smith and Jillian Ford have been selected as a recipient for the BCOE Research Grant to create an interdisciplinary teaching and research collaborative, taking up critical issues and pedagogies across middle grades, secondary, and post-secondary educational contexts. To address the research questions, they will utilize critical participatory action research (CPAR) as their methodology. The grant will support the Summer Institute stipend and resources in large, and the study will be a seed idea in the pursuit of larger external grant. 
 
Dr. Johari Harris has been selected as a recipient for the BCOE Research Grant for the study seeking to examine middle school teachers’ experiences with Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) anti-bias advisory lessons with a focus on implementation practices and teacher mindsets with a particular focus on the role of social interaction within the cultural context of school. This study will follow a cohort of middle school teachers over the course of implementation of the units paying particular attention to teachers’ experiences with lessons that explore the underpinnings of social inequity and promote critical social analysis in students.
 
Dr. Virginie Jackson has been selected as a recipient for the BCOE Research Grant for a study to provide educators with strategies and insights to create a phonics program that is both inclusive and effective for a diverse group of 5th graders. This study is significant because the impact of the study lies in its potential to significantly enhance the preparation of pre-service teachers to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students, particularly those with dyslexia or reading challenges. This project can address the pressing demand for effective, inclusive education practices in light of increasing diversity in U.S. classrooms.

The Bagwell College of Education Faculty Research Expo is an event to showcase scholarship and creative work conducted by faculty during the past two academic years. It constitutes a college-level initiative framed within the college Research Action Plan.

The Fall 2025 edition of the Bagwell College Faculty Research Expo will be held on November 19th, 2025 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event will be hybrid, and faculty will have the opportunity of presenting face-to-face in the Bagwell building or online using Microsoft Teams.  
 
Call for Abstracts: 
Faculty can submit abstracts addressing:

• Research and/or studies initiated, conducted and/or finished during the past two academic years (August 2023 to August 2025)
• Research grants initiated, conducted and/or finished during the past two academic years (August 2023 to August 2025)
• Publications (academic articles, books, book chapters, etc) released during the past two academic years (August 2023 to August 2025)
• Research and/or studies conducted in collaboration with graduate or undergraduate students during the past two academic years (August 2023 to August 2025) etc.

Proposals can be submitted as:
a)    Face-to-face or Virtual 10-minute individual presentation.
b)    Face-to-face or Virtual 10-minute collaborative presentation with internal or external colleagues.
c)    Face-to-face or Virtual 10-minute collaborative presentation with undergraduate students.
d)    Face-to-face or Virtual 10-minute collaborative presentation with graduate students.

The following prizes will be awarded:

The Bagwell College Student Scholars Expo is an event to showcase undergraduate and graduate students’ scholarship conducted at ºÚÁÏÍø during the past academic year. It constitutes a college-level version of KSU’s Symposium of Student Scholars.

The Fall 2025 fifth edition of the Bagwell College Student Scholars Expo will be held on November 20th, 2025 from 10.00 to 12.45pm. The event will be hybrid, and students will have the option of presenting face-to-face in the Bagwell Building or online using Microsoft Teams. 

Call for Abstracts: 
Proposals can be submitted as:

• 10-minute face-to-face or virtual oral presentation
• 5-minute pre-recorded presentation (e.g., video, PowerPoint slides with recorded narration)

Frequently Asked Questions
 
What is a pre-recorded presentation?
Students are invited to submit a link to a 5-minute prerecorded presentation during the submission process. Video recordings must adhere to the following guidelines:

• Submissions must be in the form of a video file (.mp4, .mov, .wmv, etc.)
• Submissions must be no more than 5 minutes in length.
• Submissions should reflect the guidelines within your discipline. (Ex. A slideshow with a voice over, a video of you discussing your research, or if the piece is performance based, a video of said performance.)
• Third-party images or music must be appropriately referenced. Music and images may be pulled from public domain websites, but they, too, must be cited.
• Best practices for citing unusual materials are providing the item’s title, creator, source, and any licensing information, such as a CC-BY or Public Domain license.
• Each submission should include a brief introduction about the presenter(s), including their name(s), class(es), and major(s).

I am choosing the virtual option for presenting and have never presented at a virtual conference before. How can I familiarize myself with the technology and make sure that everything goes according to plan?
We will be using Microsoft Teams for presenters who choose the virtual option. Teams will allow multiple people to virtually attend a session. Presenters can share their screen to show a presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Keynote) or other visuals. Attendees can ask questions virtually or by using a chat box within the session. More specific details on how to use Teams for the Bagwell College Student Scholars Expo will be sent to each participant.
 
How do I find when I'm presenting and the link to do my virtual presentation?
A detailed schedule will be shared by participants a week before the event. The schedule will include links to the different sessions. 
 
Is there a different Microsoft Teams link for presenters versus attendees?
No. Everyone uses the same link to join the session.
 
How does a presentation work for a virtual conference?

• Enter your assigned "room" at least 5 minutes before the session starts. However, It would be ideal if you could attend the 1-hour session in full.
• Share your screen and show an opening slide so attendees know they've entered the correct "room."
• If you are using presentation software like PowerPoint, Prezi, OneNote, or Genial.ly:
• Start your presentation at the assigned time, and go into "presenter" mode to make your slides easier to read for the audience. Be sure to leave plenty of time for questions at the end.
• If you are not using presentation software: We strongly encourage you to turn on your video so attendees have something to look at. More specific details about how to turn on the video feature can be found here.
• When you're finished giving your presentation, ask the audience if they have any questions. Be sure to check the chat box to see if anyone wrote any questions. 

As part of Research Week, faculty from the Bagwell College of Education (BCOE) and the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET) are invited to a networking event designed to foster collaboration and identify areas of synergy across disciplines.
