Unanimously chosen by his peers in December, Peterson carries the significant responsibility of shaping laws and overseeing the state's highest court.
Peterson's role is both intellectually rigorous and collaborative, working with the other branches of state government. He also chairs the Judicial Council and works on administrative duties, policy, and court budgeting.
Peterson’s career path includes roles as Georgia’s solicitor general, executive counsel to Governor Sonny Perdue, and vice chancellor for legal affairs for the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. He joined the Georgia Court of Appeals in 2016 and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2017.
At , Peterson transitioned from computer science to political science, driven by his interests and involvement in Student Government Association (SGA).
Peterson attributes his success to staying fully engaged in his roles and expresses, “It’s hard sometimes to be present in what you're doing, but if you're not present in the job, you’ve got now, you’re not going to do as well.”
