Cybersecurity Mentorship & Coaching Programs at ºÚÁÏÍø

KSU Cybersecurity students enrolled in the BS-Cybersecurity and MS-Cybersecurity programs of study are able to engage in a variety of professional mentoring programs.

Course Based Mentoring & Coaching

Students will have a course based mentoring experience when they enroll in CYBR 4810 or CYBR 7930. Details will be provided in the specific course.

  • Mentors are expected to  be technical professionals with 3+ years of experience, focused on cyber operations, incident response, threat intelligence, or SOC activities. These courses are 15 weeks in Fall and Spring and 8 weeks in the Summer.

    Each semester begins with a virtual Mentor Orientation session. During orientation, you will receive an overview of team assignments, project objectives, and suggested coaching approaches.

    Your expected time commitment is 8 to 10 hours per semester, which includes:

    • Attendance at the orientation session (live or via recording)
    • A series of virtual meetings with your assigned student team (6–7 members)
    • Occasional email or messaging follow-ups throughout the term
    • A brief end-of-term review of team participation and outcomes

    Program Expectations

    By agreeing to mentor, you commit to:

    • Notify the program director promptly if your availability changes
    • Attend (or watch) the orientation session
    • Coordinate with your student team to schedule virtual coaching sessions
      Remain available via email or messaging to provide ongoing guidance
    • Complete a short end-of-term evaluation of your team’s performance
    • Participate in an optional mentor debrief session at the end of the term
    • Submit a brief weekly status update via Microsoft Teams to keep faculty informed
  • Mentors are expected to be managers, senior manaers or C-level executives who are focused on governance, risk, compliance, staffing, and planning. These courses are 7-week program for all semesters.

    Your estimated time commitment is 8 to 10 hours per semester, including:

    • A virtual Mentor Orientation session
    • Several virtual meetings with your assigned team (3 graduate students)
    • Light asynchronous support via email or messaging
    • A short end-of-term evaluation of team performance
    • All mentoring activities are conducted virtually. You’ll work with your team to schedule mutually convenient times for sessions and provide flexible support throughout the term.

    Program Commitments

    Mentors are asked to:

    • Notify the program director promptly if you are unable to participate
    • Attend (or watch a recording of) the orientation session
    • Coordinate with your student team to schedule virtual sessions
    • Maintain communication via email or messaging
    • Complete a brief survey at the end of the term evaluating team engagement
    • Consider participating in an optional end-of-term Mentor Debrief / Hotwash
    • Respond to a weekly status check-in via Microsoft Teams to keep faculty informed

 

Professional Mentoring

Beginning in Spring 2026 and each Spring semester following, students can apply to a professional mentoring program that will run for the following Fall and Spring semesters. Students accepted to the program will be paired with a working professional with significant experience in the industry.

Requirements:

  • Semester Hours: Must be on track to have completed 85 semester hours by end of the Spring term.
  • Graduation Plan: Must have received advising that shows an expected graduation for the following Spring semester or later such that the student will be enrolled in the program for the following Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Grade Point Average: Must have at least a 3.25 / 4 (Undergrad) or 3.5 /4 (Grad) GPA at the time of application.

Preferences:

  • Preference will be given to students who are not yet employed in the field of cybersecurity or have not yet completed a significant industry-related internship or part-time work experience.
